Are you ‘upper limiting’ yourself?

Oooh how are you lovely? What have been your 3 wins for the week? What have been your 3 challenges and how did you work through them?

I always try to finish off the week and look at what I achieved, I try to be objective not emotional (hard I know right?!) but I do think that constant little life audits help keep us on track.

As many new opportunities are coming up for this year, I find myself drawn to reading key sections of The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. Hendricks is famous for coining the phrase used in entrepreneurial circles as “upper limiting” so, what is it?

In a nutshell “upper limiting” is when great opportunities, perfectly aligned to you, your business, your relationship etc come up and instead of leaning in to them, you pull back and maybe turn it down, make an excuse not to do it or quite simply say no.

“Upper limiting” is where you’re psychologically/emotionally blocking your own growth. You’re not allowing yourself to step forward into the ‘unknown’ territory of growth, because that’s what it is – ‘unknown’. Somewhere underneath it all, you feel more comfortable in the ‘known’ zone even though that might not be as good as where the ‘unknown’ zone could take you…

As Hendricks says “When we exceed our inner thermostat setting, we will often do something to sabotage ourselves, causing us to drop back into the old, familiar zone where we feel secure.”

The feeling of “upper limiting” has happened to me many times, I’m sure it’s happened to you too?! I think it’s a great reminder for us all. So my message to you is this, if you’re feeling that you’re on the edge of something great, starting to breakthrough to a new level in business, creativity or relationships just be aware of a niggling feeling that might creep up on you and might want you to pull back.

The remedy? Hear it and then let it go and step forward into the new ‘unknown’ but good feeling that will no doubt take you to your next level of growth.

Have you experienced “upper limiting”? How did you deal with it?

Let me know lovely, this is something we all face!

Now’s your moment, make it count!
